If you can dedicate a “creative space” in your facility, make a “blue sky” room that’s’ focus is being open to ideas, suggestions, problem definition and getting lots of possible ways to solve it.  Make sure this as a “no idea is too strange, too far out” acceptable place – where people can express themselves without fear.

One suggestion, paint the ceiling light blue – after all, it is a blue sky room, make sure it physically different from other typical conference rooms.  Have a variety of interaction heights including stools, benches, standing height stools, even bean bags if desired to put people at ease.

 Stocking this room to enable easy creativity.

People, when they walk into the room, should find the tools and aids they need to enable creativity.  Be sure there a plenty of whiteboard space, even floor to ceiling, wall to wall whiteboards.  Or using some advanced coatings, have the walls of the room painted with clear whiteboard paint – turning every wall into a “space to show what you mean” available to all.

Be sure the is a bucket full of marker pens with lots of different color and widths (some wide, some pointed) (and of course an eraser to be used sparingly).

Likewise, have bucket full of multi-colored post-it-notes.  Never underestimate the power of a stack of colored cards. I’ve heard it said that you can judge the success of the creative meeting by the number of post it notes on the wall.

Other factors in creating – using a great blue sky room:

OK – maybe this is where the free lunch comes into play.  Sometimes people will do anything – even be creative when a pizza is on the table.

The Process of Encouraging Creativity and Problem Solving

Encourage sketches.  Be sure folks know there is no such thing as a bad idea in this room.  You never know when the “anything goes” approach might  spark a great idea.  And often little creative ideas can grow into something bigger.  Plus, remember this is a “freedom place”.  A place for free ideas to roam.  A place to freely express ideas, a freedom to note ideas – no matter how crazy or unusual.

Be sure employees know that almost any place can be creative.  Corridors, hallways, break areas can all be spots for creativity.  Try to avoid blank walls in your facility.  Cover your walls with artwork, photos, pictures, the businesses accomplishments – use the wall s to spark imagination.

Today’s workers and executives often ask for standing height desks.  There a numerous health benefits.  The first big benefit is the reducing the negative impact of sitting at your desk.  In addition, you will get improvements in many other areas.  Sitting for long periods cause metabolic problems.  You do not produce enough chemicals necessary for processing sugar and fats.  Circulation suffers too. Your body wants to move and respond to outside forces.  Your muscles need to regularly flex to support healthy functions and chemical production.

The challenge (outfit our empty break room):

“We’re moving in our team in the next week or so.  Our break room is an empty space.  Quick, we need cool tables and chairs that match our corporate colors, are comfortable and fun.”

A biopharma firm in the Bay Area got cubes, office & conference room furniture and employee seating to support their growth.  Last on their mind was the break/coffee/lunch room.  Now all of a sudden, that empty space looms as a “oh my gosh” moment.

The biofpharm’s corporate colors were Deep Red, Black, complemented with a Warm Red, Burgundy, Cool Gray and Warm Green.  The break room, an open area set between two work areas was hard rock maple, with dark counter tops, wall color orange (which is going to change).  Indoff-Silicon Valley (officefurnituresanjose.com) who did their conversion of standard walls to clear-coat floor to ceiling white board coatings, was called upon to remedy this situation fast.

The office furniture procurement challenge for Indoff-Silicon Valley:

Find good looking, fast delivery chairs and tables that drew upon the corporate color scheme, were affordable, fun & functional (easily reconfigured when needed).

Indoff-Silicon Valley relied both on experience and fellow representatives to find solutions.  Mr. Harnack, Indoff-Silicon Valley’s representative, recalled a previous break room he had furnished for an accounting firm in San Jose.  The Hanna Chair from IzzyPlus was available in a variety of colors, is very comfortable, and seemed to fit the general theme of the biopharm’s firm.  A quick call to Izzy’s customer support team found that the Hanna chair with standard colors were in stock and ready for quick ship.  Yea!  Part 1 complete.

However the IzzyPlus table that typically accompanied the Hanna chair was on 4 to5 week lead time.  This wouldn’t work.  By the way, this was late on Friday (Pacific Time) and there wasn’t much hope of getting to East Coast Suppliers.  Mr. Harnack got in touch with a number of fellow Indoff representatives in the West and Mr. Ron Swanson, Oregon, had a solution.  Mr. Swanson had recently worked with OFM Inc. in North Carolina and had used their in-stock program to deliver tables to clients in Oregon.  Even though it was late on Friday, Mr. Harnack was able to track down OFM’s reps (on their mobile phones – on the way home) who were able to determine availability (of product stocked in Arizona), provide quotes and delivery estimates in time for Mr. Harnack to get a quote to the client before quitting time.  At day’s end the order was in, and the client will get first class, great looking, long-lasting, systems that match their corporate colors, all within a week or so.  Yea! Part 2 complete.

To make sure everyone was in the loop, Mr. Harnack produced custom spec sheets featuring the products, colors and design choices that could easily be shared with the biopharma execs and team members.  Plus, he laid out the space design to confirm everything would fit as planned.

Rollok Door gives easy, full opening access for 12’ wide closet at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

The Rollok Door recently delivered to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Saratoga California is now providing easy access to choir robes for the Church’s Choir.

The robe cabinet in the choir room had a 12 foot opening.  There were two pull out doors that stuck 3 feet into the choir room.  During warm ups and before and after services, these doors hampered the choir from getting the robes and returning them at the end of services.  And they block and limited access to the closet when the practice piano was in use. Since the choir had previously acquired a Russ Bassett Slim Case cabinet with a tambour door for music storage (space was tight), as they looked for solutions to the doors-getting-in-the-way problem, a roll up door seemed that it might work.

An aluminum, foam cored Rollok Door from “Rollok Doors” turned out to be the solution.  This 12 foot opening could be covered by one, 12 foot Rollok Door to give the choir the access they needed, getting rid of the obtrusive swing open doors, and provide security if needed.

While most applications of the Rollok Door are for security, in this case convenience was the key factor to use the Rollok Door.  Because the church had volunteers with good handyman capability, the Rollok Door was delivered direct and the volunteers did the install.  Prince of Peace’s pastor noted that the install when up very easily, commenting “Is it really this easy?”

Now the choir has the easy access they need and security if needed (for example, if there are visiting accompanists who need to secure instruments or equipment).   To see the inspiration, packaging, before and after video, click here.
